COVID-19 pandemic in Spain

31 January 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic in Spain began when the first case was detected on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands, in a German tourist. The virus then spread rapidly, and Spain became one of the worst-affected countries in Europe in the spring of 2020. The government declared a state of alarm in mid-March and imposed a strict national lockdown, with children confined at home for six weeks. Hospitals, particularly in Madrid and Catalonia, were overwhelmed, and care homes suffered heavily. Later waves followed, but a successful vaccination campaign put Spain among the countries with the highest rates of coverage. The pandemic caused a sharp recession, especially because of the importance of tourism to the economy.
