COVID-19 pandemic in India

30 January 2020

The first case of COVID-19 in India was confirmed in Kerala, in a student who had returned from Wuhan. The government imposed a national lockdown in late March 2020, one of the strictest in the world, which caused a mass movement of migrant workers returning to their villages. A first wave peaked in September 2020, and a far more severe second wave in spring 2021, driven by the Delta variant, overwhelmed hospitals and caused shortages of oxygen and many deaths. Official figures reported over half a million deaths, but studies and World Health Organization estimates suggested the true toll was several times higher. A vaccination campaign began in January 2021 using locally produced vaccines, and India later administered more than two billion doses.
