Zuzana Čaputová was born on 21 June 1973 in Bratislava. A Slovak lawyer and politician, Caputova was President of Slovakia from 2019 to 2024, the first woman to hold the office. She became well known as an environmental activist who led a long legal campaign against an illegal landfill in her hometown of Pezinok, for which she won the Goldman Environmental Prize. Entering politics as a liberal reformer, she won the presidency after the murder of the journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova led to widespread protests against corruption. She did not seek a second term, citing threats against her and her family.
