Founding of Trilateral Commission

July 1973

The Trilateral Commission is a private discussion group created by David Rockefeller, with the political scientist Zbigniew Brzezinski and others, to promote closer cooperation among the three main industrial regions of the democratic world, North America, Western Europe and Japan. It was founded at a time of tension in the early 1970s, caused by the Vietnam War, the end of the Bretton Woods monetary system and the oil crisis. Its members are business leaders, politicians, academics and media figures, who meet to discuss common problems in private. Jimmy Carter was a member before becoming president, and several of his advisers came from the group. It has been the subject of many conspiracy theories, which are not supported by evidence.
