Woody Allen was born on 30 November 1935 in The Bronx. An American filmmaker, actor and comedian from Brooklyn, Allen began as a gag writer and stand-up comedian before directing his own films. His comedies include Take the Money and Run, Sleeper and Annie Hall, which won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director in 1978, and he moved between comedy and drama with Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors and Midnight in Paris. He has won several Oscars for his screenplays and is also a jazz clarinetist. In the 1990s allegations of child abuse were made against him by his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, which he has consistently denied; he was never charged, but the controversy damaged his standing in Hollywood.
