Origins of American Hockey League

1936

The American Hockey League is the main developmental league for the National Hockey League, with teams in the United States and Canada. It was formed by the merger of two earlier minor leagues, the International Hockey League and the Canadian-American Hockey League, which created a single circuit for professional players just below the top level. Each team is affiliated with an NHL club, which sends younger or recovering players there to gain experience and takes players back when needed. Many famous players spent time in the league, and its championship trophy is the Calder Cup. Over the decades, teams have moved and relocated, but the league has remained the standard route for prospects into the NHL.
