Sheikh Hasina was born on 28 September 1947 in Tungipara Upazila. A Bangladeshi politician and the daughter of the country's founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina led the Awami League and served as prime minister from 1996 to 2001 and again from 2009 to 2024. Her governments presided over strong economic growth and major infrastructure projects, including the Padma Bridge, and over the repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. Critics accused her of authoritarian practices, restrictions on the opposition and the media, and violence against opponents. In 2024 mass protests, which began over civil service quotas, forced her to resign and flee to India.
