The Kashmir conflict is a long-running territorial dispute over the region of Kashmir, primarily between India and Pakistan, and also involving China. It began after the partition of British India in 1947, when the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh, faced an invasion by tribal forces from Pakistan and signed an instrument of accession to India. The first Indo-Pakistani war followed and ended with a United Nations-brokered ceasefire and a line dividing the region. India and Pakistan have fought further wars and skirmishes, and an insurgency has affected the Indian-administered part since the late 1980s. Each country claims the whole of Kashmir, while China controls Aksai Chin and part of the Shaksgam valley.
