Paulo Coelho was born on 24 August 1947 in Rio de Janeiro. A Brazilian novelist and lyricist, Coelho wrote songs for popular singers such as Raul Seixas before turning to fiction. His book The Alchemist, published in 1988, tells the story of a shepherd boy who travels to find treasure and has been translated into more than eighty languages, becoming one of the best-selling books ever. After an experience of walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain, which he recounted in The Pilgrimage, he devoted himself to writing. His other books include Brida, Veronika Decides to Die and Eleven Minutes. He was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 2002, and has a very large following on social media.
