Battle of Berlin

from 16 April 1945 to 2 May 1945

The Battle of Berlin was the final major offensive of the European theatre of the Second World War, in which the Soviet Red Army encircled and captured the German capital. Marshals Georgy Zhukov, Ivan Konev and Konstantin Rokossovsky commanded the attack, which began with breakthroughs at the Seelow Heights and the Neisse River and ended with street fighting in the city, with the Reichstag stormed on 30 April. German defenders included regular troops, Hitler Youth and the Volkssturm militia. The fighting killed large numbers of soldiers and civilians. Hitler committed suicide in his bunker, and General Helmuth Weidling surrendered the city. Germany's capitulation followed a few days later.
