Franklin Delano Roosevelt died on 12 April 1945 in Little White House, aged 63. An American Democratic politician, Roosevelt served as governor of New York and was elected the 32nd president in 1932, during the Great Depression. His New Deal programmes expanded the role of the federal government through relief, public works, banking reform and Social Security. He was elected four times, the only president to serve more than two terms, and led the country through most of the Second World War, working with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin and signing the Lend-Lease Act. Paralysed by polio at the age of thirty-nine, he used a wheelchair in private. He died in April 1945, shortly before the end of the war in Europe.
