Founding of Nordic Council

16 March 1952

The Nordic Council was founded in 1952 as a forum for cooperation among the parliaments of Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and Finland joined in 1955. Its aim was to promote practical cooperation on matters such as the free movement of people, social rights, culture and education, and it later represented the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland as well. A major result of this work was the Nordic Passport Union of 1954, which allowed citizens to travel freely between the member states, and a common labor market. The council is made up of elected members of national parliaments, and it meets in annual sessions. Its governmental counterpart is the Nordic Council of Ministers, set up in 1971.
