Nicolas Sarkozy was born on 28 January 1955 in Paris. A French politician of the centre-right, Sarkozy was mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine, minister of the interior and minister of finance before leading the Union for a Popular Movement and winning the presidency in 2007. His term was marked by the global financial crisis, the response to the euro crisis with Germany, French participation in the military intervention in Libya in 2011 and a restless, high-profile style. He lost the 2012 election to François Hollande. After leaving office he was convicted in several judicial cases, which he has contested. In 2008 he married the singer and model Carla Bruni.
