Jair Bolsonaro was born on 21 March 1955 in Glicério. A Brazilian politician and former army captain, Bolsonaro served in Congress from 1991 and rose to national prominence as an outspoken far-right figure. He won the presidency in 2018 and governed from 2019 to 2022, with policies favouring deregulation, agribusiness and a strong stance on crime. His government was criticized for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and for rising deforestation in the Amazon. He lost the 2022 election to Lula da Silva, and on 8 January 2023 his supporters stormed government buildings in Brasília. Electoral courts barred him from office, and in 2025 the Supreme Court convicted him of plotting to keep power.
