Battle of Tsushima

28 May 1905

The Battle of Tsushima was the decisive naval engagement of the Russo-Japanese War, fought in the Tsushima Strait between Korea and Japan. The Russian Baltic Fleet, under Admiral Zinovy Rozhestvensky, had sailed for seven months around Africa and Asia to relieve Port Arthur, which had already fallen, and reached the strait exhausted, trying to get to Vladivostok. The Japanese fleet under Admiral Togo Heihachiro, with better training, speed and gunnery, destroyed most of the Russian ships in a day and a night, and took thousands of prisoners. Russian losses were enormous, while Japan lost only a few small ships. The defeat helped to bring about the Treaty of Portsmouth and contributed to unrest in Russia, and it marked the arrival of Japan as a great naval power.
