The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona began with the laying of a foundation stone for a church financed by donations from a Catholic association devoted to Saint Joseph. The first architect, Francisco de Paula del Villar, resigned within a year, and Antoni Gaudi took over, redesigning the building with organic forms inspired by nature and devoting the last decades of his life to it. After his death in 1926 the work continued slowly, was damaged during the Spanish Civil War, and has gone on using modern technology and private funding. The church was consecrated as a minor basilica in 2010, and parts of it are part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Gaudi's works.
