Publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

26 November 1865

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a children's novel by Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Dodgson, a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford. It grew out of a story he improvised for Alice Liddell, the daughter of the college's dean, and her sisters on a river outing in 1862. Illustrated by John Tenniel and published by Macmillan, the book follows a girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a nonsensical world of talking animals, the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter. It was a hit, and the sequel Through the Looking-Glass followed in 1871. Playful in its logic and wordplay, it has influenced writers, artists and filmmakers ever since.
