Mahathir Mohamad was born on 10 July 1925 in Alor Setar. A Malaysian physician turned politician, Mahathir served as prime minister from 1981 to 2003, the longest tenure in the country's history, and again from 2018 to 2020. During his first period in office he pursued rapid industrialization, supporting projects such as the national car maker Proton, the Petronas Twin Towers and the Multimedia Super Corridor. He imposed capital controls during the 1997 Asian financial crisis and dismissed his deputy Anwar Ibrahim in 1998, a move that led to prolonged political conflict. He returned in 2018 at the age of 92 after leading an opposition coalition to a surprise election victory, becoming the world's oldest serving head of government. He resigned in 2020 amid a political crisis.
