Julia Gillard was born on 29 September 1961 in Barry. An Australian politician, Gillard was the country's first female prime minister, serving from 2010 to 2013 as leader of the Labor Party. Born in Wales, she emigrated as a child, trained as a lawyer and rose to become deputy prime minister under Kevin Rudd before replacing him in a party leadership challenge. Her minority government passed a carbon pricing scheme, the National Disability Insurance Scheme and school funding reforms. Her 2012 speech denouncing sexism in parliament was widely shared. Rudd returned to the leadership in 2013, and she later became involved in global education and mental health causes.
