The World Wildlife Fund is founded

11 September 1961

On 11 September 1961 in Morges, Switzerland, the World Wildlife Fund (now the World Wide Fund for Nature) was formally established by a group of scientists and conservationists, among them the biologist Julian Huxley, the ornithologist Max Nicholson and the naturalist and painter Peter Scott, who drew the logo from Chi Chi, a giant panda in London Zoo. They wanted a body to raise funds for conservation, after Huxley's alarming 1960 reports on the destruction of wildlife in East Africa. WWF has grown into one of the largest conservation organisations, with offices in over 100 countries and millions of supporters.
