Tanganyika

from 9 December 1961 to 26 April 1964

Tanganyika was a country in East Africa that became independent from British rule in December 1961, under the leadership of Julius Nyerere, whose party, the Tanganyika African National Union, had campaigned peacefully for self-rule. The territory had earlier been a German colony and then a League of Nations mandate and UN trust territory administered by Britain. It became a republic within the Commonwealth in 1962, with Nyerere as president. In 1964, after a revolution overthrew the Sultan of Zanzibar, Tanganyika and Zanzibar agreed to unite, and the new state was soon renamed the United Republic of Tanzania. The name Tanganyika survives for the mainland and for Lake Tanganyika.
