The Taiwan Stock Exchange is the main securities market of Taiwan, based in Taipei. It was established in the early 1960s, a period when the island's economy was shifting from agriculture towards export-oriented manufacturing, and it began trading the following year. The exchange grew rapidly alongside Taiwan's electronics and semiconductor industries and became one of the largest markets in Asia. Its benchmark index is known as the TAIEX. Among its most valuable listed companies is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which supplies chips to technology firms around the world. The exchange has gradually opened to foreign investors, and its development reflects the economic rise of Taiwan in the late twentieth century.
