This war between the Russian and Ottoman empires followed Ottoman repression of uprisings in the Balkans and a wave of public sympathy in Russia for fellow Slavs and Orthodox Christians. Russian and Romanian forces crossed the Danube, held out at the Shipka Pass and, after a long siege, took the fortress of Plevna before advancing almost to Constantinople. The Treaty of San Stefano created a large autonomous Bulgaria, but Britain and Austria-Hungary objected, and the Congress of Berlin cut it back. Romania, Serbia and Montenegro gained full independence, and Russia took territory in the Caucasus and Bessarabia.
