Édouard Manet died on 30 April 1883 in 8th arrondissement of Paris, aged 51. A French painter, Manet was a bridge between realism and impressionism. His large canvases Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia scandalized the Paris public in the 1860s with their modern subjects, flat handling of space and frank gaze, though he never officially joined the Impressionists. Younger painters such as Monet, Renoir and Degas admired him and gathered around him. His late masterpiece, A Bar at the Folies-Bergere, shows his mix of everyday observation and illusion. He died after a long illness that affected his legs.
