Karl Marx died on 14 March 1883 in London, aged 64. A German philosopher, economist and revolutionary, Marx studied philosophy and law and worked as a journalist, before being expelled from Germany, France and Belgium for his radical views. With Friedrich Engels, he wrote The Communist Manifesto in 1848 and settled in London, where he spent years researching in the British Museum and wrote the first volume of Das Kapital. He developed a view of history in which class struggle drives change, and argued that capitalism would be replaced by socialism. His ideas inspired labour movements and revolutions, as well as sharp debate, and shaped the social sciences.
