Abdullah II of Jordan was born on 30 January 1962 in Amman. The King of Jordan since 1999, Abdullah II succeeded his father, King Hussein, shortly before the latter's death. Educated at Sandhurst and later at Oxford and Georgetown, he served in the Jordanian special forces and in the army before taking the throne. A member of the Hashemite dynasty, which traces its descent to the Prophet Muhammad, he has sought to maintain Jordan's stability amid conflicts in its neighbors, hosting large numbers of refugees from Syria and Iraq. His rule has included constitutional reforms and economic difficulties. He is married to Queen Rania, and their son, Hussein, is the crown prince.
