Construction of Domodedovo International Airport

7 April 1962

Domodedovo lies south-east of Moscow in Moscow Oblast and is one of the three principal airports serving the Russian capital, along with Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo. It was opened in the Soviet period and was long used mainly for domestic flights and routes to Siberia, the Caucasus and Central Asia. After the 1990s it was privatised and modernised, and it became a major hub for international and regional traffic, with new terminals and a rail link to the city. In January 2011 a suicide bombing in the arrivals hall killed dozens of people, one of the deadliest attacks on civilian transport in Russia in recent years.
