Origins of Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1

1962

The Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 is the top division of the Algerian football league system. Its history goes back to the first national championship after independence, and it was long called the Division Nationale, with the professional name introduced in 2010. The league has been dominated by clubs such as JS Kabylie, MC Alger, USM Alger, CR Belouizdad and ES Sétif. Algerian clubs have also done well in African competitions: MC Alger won the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1976, JS Kabylie won it in 1981 and 1990, and ES Sétif won the CAF Champions League in 2014. The league has played an important role in the country's sporting life and in the development of players for the national team.
