Construction of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport

28 April 1962

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is the main international airport of Serbia, located at Surcin, about eighteen kilometres west of the centre of Belgrade. It opened in the spring of 1962 and replaced the earlier airport at Zemun, which was too small for modern jet aircraft. The airport was named in 2006 after the inventor Nikola Tesla, who was born to a Serb family in what is now Croatia. It is the home base of Air Serbia, the national airline. Its terminals have been expanded several times, and it handles flights to cities across Europe and a few farther destinations.
