Discovery of Staffordshire Hoard

2009

The Staffordshire Hoard is the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver ever found, uncovered in a farmer's field in Staffordshire, England, by the metal detectorist Terry Herbert. It consists of several thousand fragments of metalwork, mostly from weapons and fittings, such as sword pommels and helmet pieces, richly decorated with garnets and filigree, along with a few religious items such as a gold folded cross. The objects are dated to the seventh century and may have been buried in Mercia, but why and by whom is unknown. The hoard was declared treasure, bought by museums in Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent, and has changed ideas about the wealth and craft of early Anglo-Saxon England.
