2024 Varzaqan helicopter crash

19 May 2024

In 2024 a helicopter carrying the Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi crashed in a mountainous, forested area near Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province, in northwestern Iran. Raisi was returning from the inauguration of a dam on the border with Azerbaijan, together with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the governor of the province and other officials, and all those on board died. The helicopter, a Bell 212, was one of three in a convoy, and the area was covered in thick fog. Search teams took many hours to find the wreckage. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber became acting president, and a snap election was held, which was won by Masoud Pezeshkian.
