Solar eclipse of April 8, 2024

8 April 2024

The total solar eclipse of April 2024 crossed North America, with the path of totality running from the Pacific coast of Mexico through Texas and the central United States and on into Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces of Canada. Totality lasted up to about four minutes and twenty-eight seconds at its longest point, near Torreón in Mexico, and cities such as Mazatlán, Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo and Montreal lay in or near the path. Millions of people traveled to see it, and weather in several areas was favorable enough for good views. Because the Sun was near the peak of its eleven-year activity cycle, the corona and prominences were especially striking. The next total eclipse over the contiguous United States is due in 2044.
