In April 2024, Iran launched its first direct military attack on Israel from its own territory, firing hundreds of drones and ballistic and cruise missiles. It said that it was acting in retaliation for an Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, which killed senior Revolutionary Guard commanders. Israel, with help from the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Jordan, shot down the great majority of the projectiles, and the damage was limited. Several days later, Israel carried out a limited strike in the area of Isfahan in Iran. The exchange raised fears of a wider war in the Middle East, but both sides then stepped back for a time.
