The 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement started as student protests against a system that reserved a large share of public-sector jobs for particular groups, including descendants of those who fought in the 1971 Liberation War. Demonstrations at Dhaka University spread across the country in July, and clashes with police and with supporters of the governing Awami League led to many deaths. The Supreme Court reduced the quotas, but protests continued and developed into a broader movement against the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had ruled for fifteen years. She resigned and fled to India on 5 August, and a caretaker government headed by the Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took office.
