The 2024 French legislative election was a snap election held in two rounds, on 30 June and 7 July, called by President Emmanuel Macron after his party's heavy defeat by Marine Le Pen's National Rally in the European Parliament elections earlier in June. The National Rally came first in the first round, but in the second a tactical alliance of parties, who withdrew candidates to block the far right, changed the result. The left-wing New Popular Front won the most seats, ahead of Macron's centrist alliance, with the National Rally third, and no group had a majority. After weeks of political deadlock, Macron named Michel Barnier prime minister, whose government fell in a no-confidence vote in December.
