Attempted assassination of Donald Trump in Pennsylvania

13 July 2024

On 13 July 2024, during a campaign rally for the former president Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, a gunman fired several shots from the roof of a building outside the secured area. Trump was struck in the upper part of his right ear, and the photographs of him raising his fist with blood on his face became some of the best-known images of the campaign. A spectator, Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief, was killed, and two other attendees were seriously wounded. The shooter, a twenty-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by a Secret Service sniper. The investigation found no clear motive. The failures in security led to the resignation of the director of the Secret Service and to inquiries in Congress.
