2022 COVID-19 protests in China

from 27 November 2022 to 8 January 2023

The 2022 COVID-19 protests in China were a wave of demonstrations against the country's strict zero-COVID policy of lockdowns, mass testing and quarantine. They were sparked by a fire in an apartment building in Urumqi, in Xinjiang, where residents believed that lockdown measures had hindered rescue efforts and increased the death toll. Protests followed in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and other cities, and on university campuses, where students held up blank sheets of paper as a symbol of censorship. Some protesters called openly for political change, a rare event in China. The authorities increased security and detained some participants, but in early December they began to relax pandemic controls significantly.
