ChatGPT is a chatbot released by the American company OpenAI that can produce fluent text in response to questions and instructions. It was built on a large language model from the GPT-3.5 family, further trained with human feedback to follow instructions and give conversational answers. Within weeks of launch it attracted public attention on an unprecedented scale, and by early 2023 it was reported to have reached roughly one hundred million users. Its success prompted rivals such as Google and Microsoft to release competing products, and OpenAI followed with the more capable GPT-4 in March 2023. It also raised debates about misinformation, education, jobs and copyright.
