Creation of Android Nougat

22 August 2016

Android Nougat, version 7.0 of Google's mobile operating system, was released in August 2016, first for Nexus devices. It brought split-screen multitasking to phones and tablets, an improved Doze power-saving mode, and a redesigned notification shade in which messages could be answered directly. Under the surface, it adopted the Vulkan graphics interface and moved to a new just-in-time compiler that sped up app installation. Version 7.1 followed with features such as app shortcuts and support for the Daydream virtual-reality platform. Like other Android versions, it was named after a dessert, and rolled out slowly across manufacturers, so many phones received it months after Google's own devices.
