2016 Brussels bombings

22 March 2016

On the morning of 22 March 2016 suicide bombers attacked Brussels Airport in Zaventem and, about an hour later, the Maalbeek metro station in the center of the city near the European institutions. The attacks killed thirty-two victims and injured hundreds of others. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility, and the attackers belonged to the same network that had carried out the November 2015 attacks in Paris. Belgium declared national mourning and raised its threat level, and the airport reopened only after a few weeks, in a limited way. Several people were later convicted in Belgium for their roles in the attacks, and the events led to closer counterterrorism cooperation in Europe.
