AlphaGo defeats Lee Sedol

from 9 March 2016 to 15 March 2016

In March 2016, in Seoul, DeepMind's program AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol, one of the world's best Go players, by four games to one. Go, with more possible positions than atoms in the universe, was thought to be a decade away from being conquered by a computer. AlphaGo used deep neural networks trained on human games and by playing against itself, combined with tree search. In the second game, its 'move 37' astonished experts for its creativity. Lee Sedol won the fourth game with a brilliant move of his own. The match became a landmark in modern artificial intelligence.
