Death of Johan Cruyff

24 March 2016

Johan Cruyff died on 24 March 2016 in Barcelona, aged 68. A Dutch footballer and coach, Cruyff was the leading player of the Ajax side that won three consecutive European Cups in the early 1970s and the star of the Netherlands team that reached the 1974 World Cup final. He became the emblem of Total Football, a fluid style in which players swapped positions, and he gave his name to the Cruyff turn. He later played for Barcelona and then managed the club, building the so-called Dream Team and a youth philosophy that shaped its later success. He won the Ballon d'Or three times and remains one of the most influential figures in the history of the game.
