Launch of ExoMars

14 March 2016

ExoMars is a joint program of the European Space Agency and the Russian space agency Roscosmos to search for signs of past or present life on Mars. Its first phase was launched on a Proton rocket from Baikonur in Kazakhstan and consisted of the Trace Gas Orbiter and a small demonstration lander, Schiaparelli. The orbiter reached Mars orbit in October 2016 and has studied trace gases such as methane in the atmosphere, and it also relays data from rovers on the surface. Schiaparelli crashed during its landing attempt because its sensors misjudged the situation and shut down the engines too early. The second phase, with the Rosalind Franklin rover, was delayed, and cooperation with Roscosmos ended after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, so the European Space Agency began preparing a new launch with other partners.
