Founding of OpenAI

8 December 2015

OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research organisation that was founded in December 2015 as a non-profit laboratory. Its founders included Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever and Elon Musk, and they said that they wanted to ensure that advanced AI would benefit humanity. Musk left the board a few years later. In 2019 the organisation created a capped-profit subsidiary to raise money, with large investments from Microsoft. It became widely known for its GPT language models and for ChatGPT, released in November 2022, which brought generative AI to a mass audience. The company has been the subject of debate about safety, openness and governance, including the brief removal of Altman as chief executive in 2023.
