On 3 July 2013 the Egyptian armed forces, led by Defence Minister Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, removed President Mohamed Morsi from office after mass street protests that began on 30 June, the anniversary of his inauguration. Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, had been Egypt's first freely elected president in 2012, but critics accused him of concentrating power and failing to address economic problems. Supporters called the intervention a coup, while opponents described it as a response to popular will. The Brotherhood was soon banned, and security forces killed hundreds of protesters at Rabaa al-Adawiya square in August 2013. Sisi was elected president in 2014.
