Release of Dota 2

9 July 2013

Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena game developed and published by Valve. It is a sequel to Defense of the Ancients, a popular fan-made modification for Warcraft III, and was developed with the lead designer of the original, known as IceFrog. Two teams of five players each control a unique hero and try to destroy the opposing team's base, the Ancient, while fighting waves of computer-controlled units. The game is free to play and is supported by cosmetic items. Its annual tournament, The International, has had some of the largest prize pools in esports history, funded largely by player purchases of in-game items. Dota 2 became one of the most-played games on the Steam platform.
