Rise of Black Lives Matter

13 July 2013

Black Lives Matter began as a hashtag created by the activists Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a Black teenager, in Florida. It grew into a decentralised movement against police violence and racial inequality directed at Black people, with new momentum after the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014. In 2020, the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody triggered some of the largest protests in American history, which spread to many other countries. The movement has been praised for raising awareness and criticised or opposed by others, and it influenced debates on policing, education and public memory.
