The first Kuiper belt object is found

30 August 1992

In 1992 David Jewitt and Jane Luu, using a telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, found a faint object moving beyond Neptune, later catalogued as 1992 QB1. It was the first member of the Kuiper belt, a region of icy bodies beyond Neptune's orbit that Kenneth Edgeworth and Gerard Kuiper had predicted decades before. Thousands have been found since, among them Eris, Makemake and Haumea. Their discovery showed Pluto to be just one of many, which led to its reclassification as a dwarf planet in 2006.
