1983 Invasion of Grenada

from 25 October 1983 to 15 December 1983

The 1983 invasion of Grenada, called Operation Urgent Fury, was a military intervention led by the United States on the Caribbean island of Grenada. It followed a coup within the Marxist government of the New Jewel Movement, in which Prime Minister Maurice Bishop was arrested and then executed. President Ronald Reagan justified the invasion by the need to protect American citizens, including medical students, and by a request from neighboring Caribbean states. US troops, along with forces from several Caribbean nations, overcame the resistance of the Grenadian army and Cuban construction workers within days. The invasion was criticized by the United Nations General Assembly and by the British government, and a new government was formed, followed by elections in 1984.
