Release of Microsoft Word

October 1983

Microsoft Word is a word processor created by Microsoft, first released under the name Multi-Tool Word for the Xenix and MS-DOS systems. It was designed by Charles Simonyi and Richard Brodie, two programmers from the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, and it aimed to show text on screen as it would print, with support for a mouse. The first version sold slowly. Versions for the Macintosh and later for Windows made it a market leader, and by the 1990s it had overtaken the older program WordPerfect. Word became part of the Microsoft Office suite, and its file formats, first doc and later docx, became a worldwide standard for exchanging documents.
